In 1903, a massacre of the Jewish community occurred in the town of Kishinev, in Eastern Europe. The world was aghast at the brutality of it. The Chinese community in New York City gave a benefit performance at the Chinese Theater on Doyers Street to raise money for the victims. The organizers and performers had also fled violence and war in China, but were mostly men.
