Lillian became a nurse during an exciting moment in the history of medicine. The discovery of germ theory, theories of disease transmission, X-rays, and the concept of preventative medicine were all taking shape. She created the Henry Street Settlement to provide health services and also fought for housing regulations, worker protections, child labor laws, nurses in schools, and women’s suffrage
